By January 1969 the letter "D" had been dropped from Brush Type 4 1696 (BS) seen at York depot. Note the Class 20s, which were York based at this time. 1696 became 47108 and survived to March 1994

September 11th, 1966: This shot of A4 60019 Bittern was taken in York depot just a week after its last run with the A4 special (see shot of it arriving at York in the York section). Its nameplate and front number have been removed for safe keeping ... though it still has Ferryhill painted on buffer beam ... though not for long, soon to be replaced with York.

They had both gone by the end of the month bringing the end to this graceful and good-looking class on BR - luckily BR decided to preserve 60800 back in 1962/63

Late 1964: A1 Pacifics 60140 Balmoral and 60138 Boswell stand in the diesel section of their home depot 50A York, both out of steam. Not sure of exact date. Amazingly an almost identical photograph (but in colour) appears on the cover of the September 2008 issue of Steam World
