Bringing back fond memories D9009 Alycidon looks superb in its original BR livery Fabulous Deltic D9009 Alycidon at Wansford. The last time I saw this engine in this livery was at York in 1969 though it had large yellow front end (see York section for picture) Close up of Deltic D9009 Alycidon nameplate Alycidon Deltic D9009 Alycidon. Between 1962 and 1981 I saw this engine a total of 15 times - at Leeds Central (2), Leeds City (3), Holbeck (1), York Station (4), York depot (2), Doncaster Station (1) and depot (1) and at Kings's Cross (1) Deltic D9009 Alycidon arrives at Wansford from Peterborough 0-6-0ST No 1539 at Wansford on August 31st, 2009 Another view of Kreigslok 2-10-0 7173 Yorkshire diesel shunter (no more info) Sentinal loco Barabel Standard Class 5 73050 City of Peterborough. This was the best angle I could get. The engine was based on the Western Region for many years but transferred to Agecroft, Manchester, in 1966. where I saw it during September of that year. The only other time I saw the engine was at Patricroft depot on the last day it was open, July 5th, 1968, the engine was in store having been withdrawn during the previous month Class 50 50008 (Thunderer). I saw this engine three times during BR days - all when it was unnamed and Crewe based. During 1968 it was seen twice at Farrington Junction, Preston, on expresses (one double-heading D1840). The last sighting was more unusual - at West Vale, near Halifax, heading a fitted freight east towards Healey Mills on January 27, 1976. Behind the Class 31 is Class 37 37518. This engine was originally D6776 / 37076 - which I saw at Berwick in 1974 and then at Mirfield 4 times between 1986 and 1988 (Thornaby based) Class 31 31271 Stratford 1840-2001 Class 31 31271, originally D5801. The loco is still at Embsay undergoing complete overhaul (2009) 2009: Steamed only at weekends are (nearest) 0-6-0ST Darfield No1, visiting from the Llangollen Railway and, behind, is 0-6-0ST Monckton No1, built in 1953 for NCB Monckton Colliery, Royston, near Barnsley 2009: Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway: Former Class 14 diesel hydraulic D9513 is seen at Embsay on July 20th, 2009 (not running) 2009: Embsay Station, July 20, 2009. With no apparent identity this is former BR Class 14 D9513 (built 1964). It survived with BR only 4 years when it was sold to Ashington Colliery, Northumberland and became NCB No38. ExBR Class 03 D2148 built in 1960 Hunslet 0-6-0ST Glasshoughton No4 built in 1954. Built in 1939 by Hunslet and originally named Kinsley, it worked at South Kirby until 1974 when merry-go-round workings made it redundant North British BICC was delivered to BICC's (British Insulated Callender’s Cables) site at Prescot, Liverpool in 1957 North British diesel Peckett & Sons 0-4-0ST No1935 Hornet, built in 1937 for Black Park Colliery in Denbighshire Class 03 03189. New to Swindon depot in 1961, it moved to Barrow Hill in 1968 and then Birkenhead North in 1981. It was withdrawn from here in 1986. Ivatt 2-6-0 46441. I saw this engine twice in BR steam days - at Lancaster Green Ayre shed on August 8th, 1963 and at Carnforth on May 21st, 1967 - where it was in store having been withdrawn during May Andrew Barclay No 1865 Alexander built in 1926 Hudswell Clarke of Leeds Edward Burrows 0-4-0WT 48 The King, built in 1906. Originally D1960 it then became 47514 (1974-1979). Transferred to Haymarket it became 47703 St Mungo (1979 to 1990). In 1991 it was named The Queen Mother until March 1995 when it became Lewis Carroll (to 1997). At Tyseley in 2000 it was named Hermes which it carried through to 2008 when it reverted to its original name. I did see this engine as D1960 but have no record of where so must have been between 1962 and 1965. Later seen as 47703 at Crewe Works in 1979 (with Steve and David) Leeming Bar, June 23, 2009: DMU 101 678 Wensleydale Railway: Class 47 47715 Poseidon. Built as D1945 it became 47502 in 1974. When transferred to Scotland for push/pull work it was numbered 47715 and named Haymarket (1985). Of the original 512 built I saw all but six - this is one of the six! Of the remaining 5 not seen only 47851 survives today (formerly D1648 / 47064 / 47639) Redmire, June 23, 2009: DMU cab Wensleydale Railway: Class 03 03144. No locos are stabled there any more, just a signing on point for EWS Dryclough Junction, Halifax, with unit 142-019 coming up from Elland. March 25th, 1989: Substituting for a Type 4 diesel is this Class 31, 31410 (CD) which is seen speeding through Ravensthorpe about 15 minutes late with on of the hourly Liverpool to Newcastle expresses March 25th, 1989: Class 47 47522 Doncaster Enterprise approaches Ravensthorpe station with a Newcastle Liverpool express. From this angle it is not easy to tell that the engine is in North Eastern green June 10th, 1989: Healey Mills - Class 37 37422. Built in 1965 as D6966 its first depot was Tinsley. The engine went on to Stratford, became 37266, moved to Wales in 1981 and then in 1985 transferred to Eastfield. While here it as fitted with ETH and became 37422. It was on the move again in 1989 - back to its original depot at Tinsley where it was based when this shot was taken. May 31st, 1966: Though poor quality this is the shot I have of a Standard 2. Lostock Hall's 78037 joins the west coast main line at Farrington Junction with a freight heading towards Preston on May 31, 1966. As can be seen by the signals, it is coming off the branch from 10D, the other route being the Liverpool line. The engine survived until May 1967 May 31st, 1966 - Britannia 70022 Tornado (12B) heads south on the slow lines at Farrington North Junction March 25th, 1967 - 6: 9F 2-10-0 92051 (12A) heads south on the fast lines with an oil train March 25, 1967 - 5: On the fast lines out of Preston is Black 5 45425 (Springs Branch) with a fitted freight. Withdrawal came 7 months later March 25, 1967 - 4: Black 5 45101 of Newton Heath is seen with a parcels train heading north, about a mile south of Preston. The lines to the right lead up to Halifax and are back in use today, in the distance is Copley Viaduct which carries the Halifax - Sowerby Bridge lines. D6865 became 37165 and then 37374 April 8th, 1968: Newly transferred from 87E Landore (Swansea) is EE Type 3 D6928 (HM) with a single parcels truck, heading for Bradford via Halifax at West Vale, taken from Greetland signal box thanks to a friendly signalman Monday, April 8th 1968: With only 4 month before the end of steam, Standard 5 73069 heads a freight for Healey Mills past Greetland, on the Calder Valley main line November 3rd, 1968: Only three months since the demise of steam sees EE Type 4 D273 passing Greetland signal box with coal empties for Healey Mills. Note the shedplate just under the number - 51L - although the loco had moved recently to HM July 15th,1972: Class 47 1700 (47112) at West Vale, near Halifax, with a west-bound oil train. May 16th, 1964: Jubilee 45652 Hawke is seen on Llandudno Junction depot. This was the last time I saw this engine, withdrawal coming in January 1965 May 16th, 1964: This is 6G Llandudno Junction depot with Black 5 4-6-0 45345 (a Bangor engine) on shed. The engine survived until June 1968 at 10D July 11th, 1964: Taken at Aberwystwyth depot is Tyseley based Manor 7818 Granville Manor. The locomotive survived in service until January 1965 July 13th,1966: Morning Star is on the last stage of turning on the triangle at 55C Farnley. The engine is running on a single track line that ran for about a mile to a local factory and is now facing towards Leeds (it will return to Lancashire via the L&Y route through Wakefield) April 13th, 1968: Passing Mirfield depot is Brush Type 4 D1946 (5A) heading for the Calder Valley main line with a tanker train. The engine became 47503 The Geordie and later 47771 and is preserved on the Colne Valley Railway April 14th, 1968: Class 47 D1622 (47041 / 47630) is seen passing Farrington Junction North, Preston, with a Preston to London express. June 17th, 1978: EE Type 3 D6861 (later 37161 and 37899) passes Greetland signal box, between Elland and Sowerby Bridge, with a mixed freight bound for Lancashire November 12th,1968: Tinsley Class 37 D6802 (later 37102, 37712) arrives at Healey Mills with a mixed freight. The locomotive surives today, stored at Carnforth (Nov 2009) July 15th, 1972: While on holiday at Tenby we drove down to Kidwelly - a lovely beach right by the railway!! Here a dirty green Brush 4 D1592 (86A) heads towards Milford Haven with a tanker train. The locomotive became 47544 during 1974 and survived in traffic until October 1989 August 21st, 1984: Class 45 45142 enters Huddersfield Station with a Liverpool to Newcastle express. The locomotive, originally D83, survived until June 1987 though was not cut up until March 1994 May 13th, 1988: In the more attractive original version of InterCity livery is Class 47 47553 (CD) heading a Newcastle to Liverpool express seen passing the site of 56D Mirfield depot. This Class 47 was originally built as D1956 and later became 47260 which it carried for only 6 months before being fitted with eth and becoming 47553. In 1989 it was renumbered 47803 which it carried until its withdrawal, finally being cut up at Rotherham in 2007 August 4th, 1988: Tinsley with green Class 20 20030, Class 45 45103 February 18th, 1989: Class 47 47488 Rail Riders (CD) heads through Ravensthorpe with a Liverpool Newcastle express. The engine was originally D1713 January 20th, 1990: Class 47 47311 Warrington Yard (TI) at Holbeck. The loco survived until November 1991 April 18th, 1990: Withdrawn and burnt out Class 31s 31280 and 31260 are stored in the yard at Tinsley October 27th, 2009: Taken from express hauled by 91106 is 66056 parked as we approached Peterborough October 27th, 2009: Taken while travelling from Leeds to Peterborough is this Class 66, 66128 seen just south of Doncaster

Class 25 25212 (CD) is parked up for the weekend at Skipton Station on July 22nd, 1984. This was the only occasion I saw this locomotive Not very clean HST 43085 City of Bradford awaits depature for London at Leeds City Station on September 18th, 1985 Leeds City Station on September 18th, 1985 with Class 31/4 31439 (IM) on a parcels train. Originally D5666 A Newcastle-Liverpool express arrives at Leeds City behind 47531 on September 18th, 1985. See note Class 40 D200 survived alone in BR service to run Leeds - Carlisle trains during 1985, seen here ready to depart City Station on September 19th Holbeck depot on May 12, 1988 with Class 47 47207 Bulmers of Hereford (TI). Originally D1857, it was cut up in January 2005 Intercity liveried Class 47 47626 Atlas at Holbeck during January 1990. To the right is 31404. Leeds Holbeck, June 1990: Inter City liveried 47567 Red Star (BR) and in all over dull grey is 47332 (IM) Class 47 47515 Night Mail nears Leeds City on August 25th, 1990 While waiting for the Duchess of Hamilton on August 25, 1990, this 47/3 47332 passes Wortley with a summer Saturday train from the south (which includes some NSE stock) Duchess 46229 Duchess of Hamilton approaches Leeds from Skipton. It is joining the lines to London and Bradford which branch left here, with the Harrogate lines on the right Duchess of Hamilton at Leeds on August 25, 1990 46229 at Wortley approaching the station April 1991 Holbeck lineup - just one of these five Class 47s survives today - see notes Class 47 47002 Sea Eagle (TI) on Holbeck depot. Originally D1522 it was withdrawn 3 months later, in July 1991 and cut up in June 1994. Behind is 47517 Andrew Carnegie (became 47758) D7672 Tamworth Castle. Holbeck kept the engine in immaculate condition and used it for training purposes for a couple of years before preservation Class 37/4s at Holbeck: 37425 Concrete Bob and 37422 (both IM) along with Class 25 D7672 Leeds Holbeck, May 1991: With blue solebar is Class 31 31413 The Severn Valley Railway (CD). To the right is 31531. Three 31s all in different liveries - 31247 (red solebar), 31563 (Dutch) and 31230. On the end is 37202. All are IM based Leeds Holbeck, September 1993: Class 37 line-up, left to right, large logo liveried 37128 (TI), Railfreight 37285 (TI), Railfreight 37059 Port of Tilbury (TI) and the old corporate blue livery of 37217 (IM) Holbeck, December 1993: Graffiti on a 47 - part InterCity liveried 47515 (xNight Mail) stands with 47448 (xGateshead). 47448 was withdrawn in December 1991 wheras 47515 was stored and not officially withdrawn until April 2001. It was cut up during May 2006 (at Crewe) Class 56 56036 at Knottingley with a Transrail / Civil engineer's Dutch livery mix Class 58 58020 Doncaster Works at Knottingley. This engine is currently working as L43 in Spain (Feb 2008) Class 58 58047 at Knottingley on December 13, 1997 Class 56 56038 Western Mail at Knottingley. In its early days this would have been very rare here as it is a former Cardiff based engine. It went on to carry the EWS livery Originally D6605, then 37305, this Class 37 - 37407 Blackpool Tower (CD) - is unusual at Knottingley Depot. Other WD 2-10-0s present here that day (all withdrawn) were 90751, 90758, 90761, 90762, 90767, 90770, 90771, 90772 July 27th, 1963: Jubilee 45591 Udaipur (5A) heads north into Scotland at Floriston (between Carlisle and Gretna Green) with a summer extra. The engine had only 4 months to go before withdrawal July 28th,1963: Clan Pacific 72009 Clan Steward heads for Scotland at Floriston, just north of Carlisle July 31st, 1990: Class 47 47541 The Queen Mother (IS) enters Keith with a train for Inverness. Originally D1755 (87E) it became 47541 in 1974 moving to Scotland in 1978. In 1994 it became 47773 and is now preserved July 31st, 1990: 47541 The Queen Mother approaches Keith wrong line (the south-bound express with 47701 is in distance) July 31st, 1990: What seems an odd way of working - all Aberdeen expresses left Keith on the wrong line. In this case 47701 runs down to the stop signal to await a north-bound train July 31st, 1990: Class 47 47701 St Andrew leaves Keith for Aberdeen. See notes August 1st, 1990: Inverness-based Class 47 47460 leaves Keith for Aberdeen. Originally D1580 is was first based at Gateshead and had a spell at Holbeck during the 1970s. It moved to Scotland in 1979 and after its 11 year period here it returned south in July 91 to Crewe, had a short spell at Tinsley, returned to Crewe and was withdrawn in January 1992

As D56 it was one of the first of the Class 45/46s to be named (after D100 and D163) At Heaton Lodge Junction is Class 47 47436 (formerly D1552) with a Newcastle Liverpool express. The engine transferred to Tinsley in 1990 and gained the unofficial name BUZNAK until its demise at the end of 1991 Mirfield, Saturday, October 26, 1985: A real treat for me was the sighting of this InterCity liveried class 47 - at a time when only a couple had been so treated. Stratford based Class 47 47487 is pulling an Illuminations special from London to Blackpool and is about to take the Calder Valley main line. I saw this engine as D1707 (green) at York in 1968, then at Healey Mills in 1972 (blue), also a couple of times at Holbeck. However, this was to be the final sighting. It withdrawn at the end of 1988 My records show this to be Class 47 47573, seen here at Mirfield on December 16, 1985. It is difficult to tell from this slide if it has a silver roof (doesn't look silver to me) - but at this date it should have Gateshead 47 47421 The Brontes of Haworth at Heaton Lodge Junction with a Newcastle Liverpool express on January 25, 1986 Class 47 47633 Orion at speed with a Liverpool Newcastle express near Mirfield on January 25, 1986. The engine had only recently been renumbered from 47083 (and was originally D1668) Class 37 37095 British Steel Teesside (TE) with an oil train heading east at Heaton Lodge Junction, Mirfield, on February 22, 1986 Class 56 56074 Kellingley Colliery comes off the Calder Valley line at Heaton Lodge Junction on February 22, 1986. By this date the Snow is on the ground as Class 47 47436 heads a Newcastle Liverpool express near Mirfield on February 22, 1986 March 29th,1986: Class 45/1 45102 (exD51) passes through Mirfield Station with a Newcastle-Liverpool express. The engine was withdrawn before the year was out, finally cut up in November 1988 April 3rd,1986, 2.50pm: Silver roof Class 47 47544 passes Mirfield with a Newcastle Liverpool express. The locomotive (exD1592) was withdrawn in October 1989 after catching fire April 3rd, 1986, 2.46pm: Unusual to see an 08 running light engine at Mirfield - but here 08579 (exD3746) heads back to Healey Mills from Huddersfield station pilot duty April 3rd, 1986: 25199 leads 25190 at Mirfield. By 1986 these engines were quite rare with most of the class withdrawn April 3rd, 1986, 2.40pm: Two Class 25s - 25199 leading 25190 (both CD), come off the Calder Valley main line at Heaton Lodge Junction, with an oil train for Hunslet April 3rd, 1986, 2.25pm: Having come down the Calder Valley Class 56 56109 with an empty MGR is seen at Heaton Lodge Junction. In 2007 the engine was stored at Ferrybridge April 3rd, 1986, 2.12pm: Class 47 47364 (CD) is seen near Mirfield with an oil train heading towards Lancashire. Originally D1883 the engine became 47981 in December 1993 and was eventually cut up in June 2000 April 3rd, 1986, 2.05pm: Class 47s 47404 and 47379. There were 8 Westerns, 3 Warships and 2 Hymeks on shed along with over 70 steam locos June 2nd, 1963: Perhaps not the best of photographs but nevertheless the only one I took of an unrebuilt BB class engine - 34066 Spitfire (83D) is inside 70A Nine Elms depot July 11th, 1964: Shrewsbury depot - taking water is Hall 6933 Birtles Hall (84E). This was the only colour shot I took in 1964 - taken while en route to a holiday in Tenby February 17th, 1973: Hymek D7055 leaves Paddington for Worcester. This was an elusive class for me and was the only one I managed to photograph - just before the last few were withdrawn from service. 7055 survived just two more months March 6th, 1973: D10 Tryfan passes Toton depot with a coal train. That day all but one (D7) Class 44s were seen with D3 and D6 still in green March 6th, 1973: D2 Helvelyn at Toton with a coal train. I had last seen this engine at 5A Crewe North in 1962 March 6th, 1973: Class 25 7617 at Toton. Unable to find neg, this is scan of print June 26th, 1973: Class 20 8016 light engine at Toton June 29th, 1975: Second shot of D1065 Western Consort at Cardiff. This proved to be the last Western I ever saw in normal BR service June 29th, 1975: D1065 Western Consort is seen at Cardiff as we passed through the station after a day at Barry Island June 29th, 1975: Class 47 47524 (formerly D1107) is seen at Barry Island station. Still in green livery but with large yellow front end March 27th, 1967: Newly delivered Class 20s D8300 and D8301 at York. Also present that day were D8302 and D8304. March 27th,1967: Tinsley EE Type 3 D6800 (Class 37 37100) at the far end of York depot where a number of diesels were usually to be found March 27th. 1967: The Class 46s seemed to get painted blue pretty quicky - Gateshead's D186 (46049) at York. Stanier Class 5 45156 Ayreshire Yeomanry is on 56A Wakefield depot during 1963. The engine carries a 26C shed plate (Bolton) April 7th, 1963: Although not very sharp an interesting shot: An unidentified WD 2-8-0 trundles through Wakefield Kirkgate complete with breakdown crane at nearly 5.30pm on Sunday, April 7th, 1963. April 21st, 1963: Britannia Pacific 70002 Geoffrey Chaucer (of 31B March) is on 56A Wakefield depot January 31st, 1966: Local WD 2-8-0 90633 runs into Healey Mills with brake van April 11th, 1966: Brush Type 4 D1895 outside 56A Wakefield in 1966. Little did we know at the time that it would become 47376 and eventually be saved for preservation August 26th, 1966: Not the best of negatives but still interesting. B1 61030 Nyala (56A) runs light at Healey Mills. Note on the distant hillside is an 8F with a freight on long closed line from Barnsley via Crigg and Middletown which joined the main line just west of Healey Mills. The engine is on a stretch known as the Golden Mile (info thanks to August 26th, 1966: General view of Healey Mills in 1966 - with WD 90076 running light engine. There are two other WDs in this picture plus and 08 and 03 January 23rd, 1967: Healey Mills in January 1967: Class 37 D6860 (37168) with one of the many coal trains that arrived every day. In the distance can be seen a steam train (WD 90099, 50D) on the flyover into the far yard January 31st, 1967: Holbeck Class 5 44854 on an oil train at Healey Mils. Notice on adjacent track is WD 90099 (50B) with a freight May 8th, 1967: 9F 2-10-0 92047 (8H) runs light engine into Healey Mills yard after turning on the triangle. EE type 3 D6864 is leaving on a freight, the date is May 8, 1967. Thumbnail looks corrupted but full image is ok On May 8, 1967, WD 2-8-0 90678 (56A) arrives with a coal train. This was my last sighting of the engine which was withdrawn the following month June 20th, 1967: 8F 48090 of 9K Bolton runs light engine into Healey Mills after turning on the Wakefield-Barnsley-Healey Mills triangle June 20th, 1967: Healey Mills with Class 37 D6865 passing with a freight complete with brake tender March 8th, 1967: 9F 2-10-0 92069 of Birkenhead heads a tanker train west through a busy Healey Mills - D6860 is leaving with an empty coal train and the freight arriving to the right of the 9F was headed by D6788 of Hull. It had 95 hits when reset to 0 by Fotopic in June2007 September 26th, 1967: Very lucky to catch this unusual working passing Healey Mills - D5242 towed Jubilee 45596 Bahamas to Hunslet, Leeds, for work on preservation. It had been stored at 9B Stockport for over a year. Notice all the Class 37 and 40s in background - and the braketenders. September 29th, 1967: 9F 2-10-0 92101 (8H Birkenhead) arrives tender first at Healey Mills from the Wakefield direction with a coal train. The engine was withdrawn the following month. Sorry about the quality September 29th, 1967: Not a good negative - Class 47 D1767 (55A) passes Healey Mills with a troop train heading west. The engine went on to become 47172 County of Hertfordshire, 47583 and 47734 Crewe Diesel Depot Quality Approved (!) and carried a number of liveries. Cut up May 2008 September 29th, 1967: Poor quality negative - but here is ex-works and now blue Class 40 D248 (HM) running light with braketender at Healey Mills March 25th, 1968: EE Type 3 D6835 (later 37135 and 37888), of Hull, leaves Healey Mills with a mixed freight. In the background is Brush Type 2 D5845 (later 31311) of Tinsley in the then new BR livery. Just one steam locomotive was seen - see pic of 8F 48384 March 25th, 1968: Steam is becoming very scarce by March 1968. Stanier 8F 48384 has brought in a freight from Lancashire and leaving to turn on the Wakefield - Barnsley - Healey Mills triangle and return light to Rose Grove, Burnley July 4th, 1968: Stanier 8F 48111 (xBolton) at Healey Mills. Withdrawn in March 1968, the 8F was stored in a line with three other 8Fs, a single Black 5 and one Standard Class 5. Chalked in white on the tender is July 4th, 1968: Healey Mills with 8Fs 48532 and 48744 (both exBolton engines) await movement to Drapers of Hull. Three EE Type 3s are parked by the depot July 4th, 1968: Standard Class 5 73126 (Patricroft) and Stanier Black 5 45101 (Newton Heath) await their fate. Both were withrawn in April 1968. See note July 4th, 1968:Peak D65 Grenadier Guardsman is seen arriving at Healey Mills. During the 1960s these were comparatively rare here. The engine became 45111, withdrawn in May 1987. Note the class 37 in background March 24th, 1969: Brush Type 4 D1518 is comparatively rare sight at Healey Mills with this mixed freight. The lines into Leeds from Huddersfield can be seen behind the engine July 13th, 1966: On most visits to 55C Farnley only steam locos were to be seen. However, on this Wednesday in 1966 EE Type 3 D6793 (51L Thornaby) was on shed. The engine later became 37093 and subsequently 37509. Sorry about the poor quality, the negative is in very poor condition July 13th, 1966: Black 5 44826 with 8F 48664 behind - seen at their home depot, Farnley Junction August 8th, 1966: Class 5 45080 at its home depot of 55C Farnley September 13th, 1966: Britannia 70026 Polar Star (9B Stockport) at 55C Farnley. The engine looked very clean in unlined green livery and painted name and was travelling at a reasonable speed when this was taken. It was withdrawn at the end of the year, this my last sighting January 4th, 1967: 55F Manningham withdrawn Ivatt 2-6-0 43054 is in a sorry state. Not much better for 43050, in steam behind, a cop for me having been transferred from 51A. January 4th, 1967: 43099 is dead and awaiting removal at 55F Manningham January 4th, 1967: March 6th, 1967: This was the last time I ever saw Jubilee 45647 Sturdee (55C) - seen heading a freight towards Leeds just south of Bingley on a Monday evening. The engine was withdrawn the following month. The freight train also visible having just passed was hauled by 43077 (55F) March 6th, 1967: Holbeck Peak D14 (later 45015) is just south of Bingley (location known as Dowley Gap) making for Leeds with the Thames Clyde express April 16th, 1967: Sulzer Type 2s (Class 25s) D5253 and D5254 are in line with D5174 and D5251 at 55B Stourton April 19th, 1967: 9F 2-10-0 92151 (8H) has just passed Bingley heading for Leeds with this oil train during its last few days of service. The engine was withdrawn before the end of the month June 29th, 1967: Standard 9F 2-10-0 92086 (8H) at 55A Holbeck depot. What a great collection of vehicles! June 29th, 1967: Standard 9F 2-10-0 92086 (8H) arrives light engine at 55A Holbeck depot January 3rd, 1969: Class 40 D347 (HM) and Class 24 D5147 (HO) run light engine past Holbeck. 157 hits before accidental reset by Fotopic August 16th, 1972: Class 47 1780 at its home depot, 55A Leeds Holbeck. The locomotive became 47185 in 1973, then 47602 in 1983 (and named Glorious Devon in 85). Then in 1989 it became 47824 and its final number was 47782 in 1994. It was cut up in 2007 November 2nd, 1972: Leeds Holbeck with immaculate looking Class 47 1534 (47426) of Gateshead in the then new blue livery. The engine is stood on No1 fuel road (known as The Pot by Holbeck men). The locomotive eventually wore the large logo livery and in 1986 went to Tinsley where the name Dibatag was neatly painted to it. In 1991 it went to Old Oak and in 1993 was withdrawn (cut up May 1997) August 24th, 1974: Class 47 47277 of Knottingley on 5 Road at 55A Leeds Holbeck. Behind is local engine 45013. The flashing light on the cab roof denotes it was fitted for slow speed running on MGR trains.

It was due into Carnforth at 5.31pm. 1A69 is the correct reporting number. Many thanks to Tony Jenkinson for this information. A Jubilee and a Fowler tank engine were also seen. It survived to March 68 at 9K. In front of the engine is 45096, which made it to the end at 10F September 21st, 1966: Stanier Black 5 44674 (12A) and 8F 2-8-0 48011 (9J) at Agecroft September 21st, 1966: Local 9J engine 8F 48164. The engine went on to 10D, withdrawal coming in October 1967 September 21st, 1966: 9J line up with (left to right) Carlisle Black 5 44674, 8Fs 48011, 48397 and 48164 (all 9J) May 21st, 1967: Taken in heavy rain at 10A Carnforth is Britannia 70049, formerly Solway Firth April 10th 1968: Rose Grove - Standard 4 75019 stands with Black 5 45345 July 5th, 1968: Black 5 44829 (a former 5B engine) at its home depot Bolton. The partly visible shunter is D2516, one of a class of 20 Hudswell-Clarke 0-6-0s. It was awaiting disposal. July 5th, 1968: Stanier Black 5 44888 at 9K Bolton shortly before its closure July 5th, 1968: Good but sad study of Black 5 44777 at 9H Patricroft on the last day before the depot closed July 5th, 1968: Standard Class 5 73010 is seen awaiting its fate inside 9H Patricroft - the depot closed the following day July 22nd, 1967: This Black 5, 45388, was a cop for me - taken on my last ever visit to a steam depot during BR steam operation - at 10F, its new home depot, having previously been based at 8C for a few years. September 4th, 1965: Steam everywhere as 9F 92031 passes Mirfield sheds with a coal train for Lancashire. October 1st, 1965: Jubilee 4-6-0 45581 Bihar and Orissa (55C) approaches Mirfield off the Huddersfield line with a short parcels train. An 8F can be seen in the distance coming off the Calder Valley line November 8th, 1965: WD 2-8-0 90639 makes a fine spectacle as it passes Mirfield depot on a crisp November morning during 1965. Two more WDs can just be made out in the siding and a TransPennine unit has just passed the engine heading for Leeds January 7th, 1966: Eventually to be preserved - Bolton Black 5 45110 passes Mirfield depot on its way back to Lancashire with a coal train January 31st, 1966: Newton Heath 8F 48602 heads towards Healey Mills at Mirfield with a coal empties train on a cold January day March 4, 1966: Stanier 8F 48067 of Royston heads east at Mirfield March 4th, 1966: Stanier 8F 48511 of Bolton heads for the Calder Valley with a coal train passing 56D Mirfield depot. This is the only time I ever saw a Mirfield engine on this turn July 5th, 1966: 8F 48371 of 9E heads west with a steel train July 5th, 1967: A Brush Type 4 on a freight at Mirfield in 1966 was exceptional.
